E-Cigarette Starter's Guide

Welcome to the myohm Starter's Guide to e cigarettes and vaping.

We understand that this can seem overwhelming at first, so our mission is to make it easy for you to understand and find your perfect set-up. Here we've covered some frequently asked questions to get you started:

What is an e cigarette?

An e cigarette is a handheld electronic vape that heats liquid to generate water vapour; this simulates the feeling of smoking.

E cigarettes are also known as e cigarettes, e-cigs, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) or electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS), personal vaporizers, vapes or PVs.

How are e cigarettes constructed?

The main components of an e cigarette are a battery, clearomizer/tank, and coil (heating element).

What is e-liquid?

E liquid (or juice) is the mixture used in e cigarettes and generally consists of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavourings and/or nicotine. Ingredients vary from brand to brand, so check the information before buying.

How is vaping different to smoking?

Instead of cigarette smoke, the user inhales an aerosol, commonly called vapour. The e cigarette heats the e liquid, creating an aerosol that simulates smoking, but without combustion. The device does not use a flame, nor does it vapour between puffs, like a traditional cigarette.

Additionally, the look and feel of an e cigarette is different; many new vaporizers look nothing like traditional cigarettes, and feel comparatively heavier and more rigid to hold. Plus, puff-time can be longer and require more forceful sucking. This will take some adjustment to get used to.

Are e cigarettes better than cigarettes?

Yes. E cigarettes are less hazardous and less harmful than smoking cigarettes, as they reduce smokers' exposure to carcinogens and other toxic substances found in cigarette. Vaporizers are more cost effective and odour-free. E cigarettes also require a hand-to-mouth action that mimics familiar behavioural habits, so they are the best devices for helping smokers' quit smoking.

Which e cigarette should I buy?

We recommend new users begin with a pen-styled, all-in-one device or an advanced vape kit to get acquainted with vaping and make the transition from smoking easy and hassle-free. After a couple of months, most vapers choose to upgrade to a more personalised set-up to suit their needs.
